Democratic lawmakers demand federal probe of alleged Black hangings, experts say most are suicides

In a letter circulated on the House floor, Rep. Ayanna Pressley and 59 fellow Democrats called for a federal investigation into a series of deaths they described as “modern‑day lynchings” of Black Americans. The letter, signed by members of the progressive “Squad,” claims that Black individuals have been found hanging from trees in states ranging from Mississippi to Michigan and New York, labeling the situation a “national crisis.”

Letter’s claims and political context

The lawmakers assert that the deaths raise “significant suspicion of foul play” and argue that federal inaction would amount to “complicity.” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez, also a signatory, noted on X that ten such hangings have been reported this year and urged immediate action to stop what she called “racial terror.” The letter frames the issue as a resurgence of historic racial violence and calls on the Department of Justice to intervene.

Law‑enforcement findings and suicide statistics

Local police departments across the country, however, have consistently concluded that most of the incidents were suicides. In each case, investigators cited evidence such as personal notes, lack of forced entry, and the absence of forensic signs of homicide. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that more than 11,000 people in the United States died by suicide using hanging or a related method in 2024 – an average of over 30 deaths per day, including hundreds of African‑American individuals.

One murder case amid the broader pattern

One notable exception involved a young African‑American woman found hanging outside an abandoned house in Jackson, Mississippi. That death was ruled a homicide, and a 51‑year‑old suspect – also African‑American – has been arrested and charged with murder. While the case received media attention for its historical context, it does not support the broader claim that all recent hangings are racially motivated killings.

Critics and political motivations

Critics of the letter, including several law‑enforcement officials and independent analysts, argue that the push for a federal probe is driven more by partisan rhetoric than by evidence of a coordinated hate‑crime campaign. They point out that the geographic spread of the incidents – from the Deep South to the Midwest and Northeast – mirrors the random distribution of suicide cases rather than a systematic pattern of racially targeted murder.

Response from the administration

The Trump administration, while not directly commenting on the letter, has emphasized the importance of accurate data in shaping public policy. Officials have reiterated that resources should be allocated to address the underlying mental‑health crisis that contributes to the high suicide rate, rather than pursuing unfounded investigations that could divert attention from proven solutions.

What this means for readers

For communities across the nation, the debate underscores the need for careful distinction between genuine hate crimes and tragic self‑inflicted deaths. While the desire to protect vulnerable populations is understandable, policymakers and the public are urged to rely on verified law‑enforcement findings and public‑health data when forming responses to such sensitive issues.
