Camas celebrates new Doc Harris Stadium field as high‑school football returns

Friday night marked a special moment for Camas High School football. The newly installed playing surface at Doc Harris Stadium was unveiled under bright lights, offering a striking red‑and‑green design that honors the school’s 2016 and 2019 state championships. The field’s alternating shades of green, red end zones, and a bold red “C” at midfield were funded by voter‑approved bonds, a testament to community support for local schools.

Traditions keep the spirit alive

Even with the fresh turf, beloved Camas traditions remained intact. A heartfelt salute to the visiting team welcomed fans who traveled over 200 miles, and the iconic Kong mascot rose high to greet the home crowd. The Camas band marched to the visitors’ side and performed the Chihuahna fight song, while cheerleaders warmed up for the pre‑game rally.

Game recap

Despite the festive atmosphere, the Papermakers fell short, losing 28‑7 to Chiawana Riverhawks from Pasco. Camas coach Adam Mathiesson praised the effort, noting the significance of hosting a top‑ten opponent early in the season. Riverhawks senior Cooper Sisson expressed admiration for Camas’ community spirit, calling the packed stands “amazing.”

Player highlights

Newcomer Braden Cook, a highly regarded defensive lineman who transferred from Olympia, made an immediate impact with several key plays. His debut underscored the talent level present in Southwest Washington high‑school football.

Looking ahead

The game set the tone for the rest of the season, providing momentum for both teams. Fans left the stadium energized by the blend of new facilities and time‑honored customs, eager for the next Friday night showdown.
