Broward County Public Schools and Miami-Dade County Public Schools have both retained their ‘A’ grades, according to the state’s report cards. The superintendents of both districts, Jose Dotres at MDCPS and Howard Hepburn at BCPS, emphasized the importance of dedicated teachers and a data-driven approach to instruction.

Academic Achievement

Academic achievement is up in both districts, with nearly 70% of schools in Broward retaining an ‘A’ or improving a letter grade. In Miami-Dade, student achievement has risen in every subject area since the pandemic. The districts’ superintendents cited a number of factors contributing to the drop in enrollment, including fewer babies being born and the high cost of living driving families out of South Florida.

Despite the challenges, both districts are committed to providing high-quality education and competing with private and charter schools. As Superintendent Dotres noted, ‘We are a school district that is offering choice to parents, choices to students, and we do not stop innovating because we know we have to compete.’ Superintendent Hepburn added, ‘I support parents’ opportunity to choose, they should have that right, but I support competition, and in a competitive environment, we’re showing that we’re the best.’
