Genea Powell, a 55-year-old Orlando native, is an inspiration to many as she lives independently despite being born with cerebral palsy. Powell, who graduated from Evans High School, loves poetry and music and has worked hard to achieve her goals.
Quest for Independence
Powell has lived in a Quest group home, which helps people with developmental disabilities experience a full life. With the help of Ebony Rutland, the employment service manager for Quest, and Carlos McClellan, who knew Powell when she lived at Quest, she has been able to find a job and become financially independent.
Powell works at Quest, putting RFID stickers on cups so that companies can keep track of how many are sold. She enjoys her job, which gives her the independence to earn a paycheck and take care of her own finances. Powell is proud of her accomplishments and is excited to move into her own apartment later this month.
Powell’s story is an inspiration to many, showing that people with disabilities can achieve their goals and live independently with the right support. As Rutland said, ‘We don’t focus on your disability, we focus on your ability,’ which is the approach that has helped Powell succeed.
