Britain Endures Hottest Summer on Record Amid Unrelenting Heatwaves

London – The United Kingdom has just experienced its hottest summer on record, according to the Met Office’s provisional data dating back to 1884. 2026’s mean temperature of 16.5 °C (61.7 °F) edged out last year’s 16.1 °C (61 °F) and the previous high of 15.7 °C (60.2 °F) set in 2018.

Heatwaves and Their Toll

Successive heatwaves began in late May and returned each month, with two major spikes in July. The peak temperature of 38 °C (100.4 °F) recorded in Norfolk on June 26 set a June record, while London reached 38.1 °C (100.6 °F) on August 13, the hottest day of the year.

Health officials warned that the extreme heat contributed to 2,877 excess deaths in England during May and June, according to the U.K. Health Security Agency. Families reported sleepless children, seniors struggling with heat, and farmers watching fields dry out.

Climate Change Amplifies the Risk

“These records are now breaking with increasing frequency, reflecting the influence of human‑induced climate change,” said Amy Doherty, head of the National Climate Information Center. The Met Office calculated that climate change made such a hot summer 130 times more likely. Without human‑caused greenhouse‑gas emissions, a summer this extreme would have been a once‑in‑a‑thousand‑years event; now it is expected roughly once every nine years.

Government Response

Minister of Climate Transition Katie White called the summer “a brutal reminder that we’re not waiting for climate change to arrive in Britain; we’re living in the middle of it.” She highlighted the impact on children, older relatives, farmers, firefighters and the armed forces battling wildfires across the country.

All of England, Wales and Northern Ireland set new mean‑summer temperature records, while Scotland, though cooler and less dry, tied its sixth‑warmest summer. Drought conditions persist across Wales and much of England, prompting water‑use restrictions in several regions.

Looking Ahead

Officials stress that continued preparation is essential. Water‑conservation measures, heat‑health alerts and support for agricultural producers are being expanded. The Met Office will keep monitoring temperature trends as the nation adapts to a new climate reality.
