Tarpon Springs commission clash erupts over vice mayor’s conduct

During a Tarpon Springs commission meeting on Aug. 25, commissioners engaged in a heated exchange that turned personal rather than policy‑focused. Vice Mayor Panagiotis Koulias used his allotted comment time to defend himself against criticism from Commissioner Michael Eisner about recent absences, then launched attacks on fellow commissioners.

Escalating insults and procedural showdown

Koulias called Eisner a “putz of putzes,” a “lame duck,” and a “selfish narcissist,” before turning his ire toward Commissioner Lori Weaver, labeling her a “space cadet.” Mayor John Koulianos repeatedly intervened, urging Koulias to stop the personal attacks.

Weaver responded by moving a motion to remove Koulias from the vice‑mayor position, citing his behavior and unexcused absences. Eisner seconded the motion. Both commissioners cited the city’s Rules of Procedure, adopted in June 2025, which require members to uphold decorum and prohibit personal attacks.

Vote and outcome

After debate, the commission voted 3‑2 against the motion. Weaver and Eisner voted to remove Koulias; Commissioners David Banther, Koulias, and Mayor Koulianos opposed it. The vote did not affect Koulias’s elected seat, only the leadership role of vice mayor, which the board selects annually.

Banther, who described the meeting as a “Jerry Springer show,” offered to vote against removal only if Koulias apologized to Weaver. Koulias issued a qualified apology, which Banther rejected, saying the apology was conditional.

Absences and future ambitions

Koulias defended his recent absences, explaining he traveled to Greece to accompany his mother after a 40‑year separation and that the board had approved his time away. He suggested the removal effort might be linked to rumors of a mayoral campaign, noting he has until Oct. 2 to decide whether to run.

Commissioner Banther speculated Koulias may resign in October to pursue the mayor’s office, which could open the vice‑mayor slot “organically.” Koulias denied a definitive plan, calling the removal attempt an attempt to tarnish his name.

Continuing tension

Mayor Koulianos and other commissioners warned that the board’s ongoing drama must end, emphasizing the need for respectful discourse and adherence to procedural rules. The incident highlights the challenges of maintaining civility in local governance while members navigate personal grievances and potential future elections.
