A boil water advisory has been issued for approximately 10,000 Akron residents following a water main break Friday at 3 a.m. The advisory affects the entire “West High” service area, which includes portions of Kenmore, Sherbondy Hill and Highland Square.
Affected Areas
To see if your water service is affected, view the map at the top of this article. Affected residents are advised to boil their water until further notice from the city.
The advisory will remain in effect for at least 18 to 24 hours after the repair is completed and normal water pressure returns. Water used for drinking or cooking should be brought to a full boil for a minimum of 2 minutes and returned to the proper temperature before use.
The repair is expected to be completed Friday afternoon. The break occurred on a 12-inch water main on Superior Avenue at Leonard Street. A drop in water levels reduced water pressure, which has since been restored, but drops in pressure can allow contaminants to enter service pipes.
Affected residents should be prepared for additional disruptions in water quality, which can include discolored water or a potential temporary increase in lead levels.
The U.S. EPA recommends the following actions to reduce possible lead exposure in drinking water: For additional information visit drinktap.org or www.epa.gov/safewater/lead. The city will issue an advisory when the boil water alert is lifted.
