The Natrona County Library in Casper, Wyoming, is currently hosting an exhibit called ‘Small Figures, Big Narratives,’ which highlights the stories of lesser-known figures from the American Revolution. The exhibit was created in partnership with the Fort Caspar Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Casper Doll Collectors Club.
Handcrafted Dolls Tell the Stories
The exhibit features handcrafted dolls dressed in period clothing, displayed in scenes depicting the American Revolution. Alongside soldiers portrayed in battle, the exhibit highlights women whose roles in securing American independence were equally important but have often been overlooked by history.
According to Fort Caspar Chapter Historian Kathy Dilgarde, the idea for the exhibit began when members of the DAR discussed highlighting lesser-known stories from the Revolutionary War. ‘I said, ‘Wouldn’t that be fun to do with dolls?’ Dilgarde said. The project took about two and a half months to complete, with each doll’s outfit taking around two to four hours to create.
The exhibit is on display at the Natrona County Library until September. In addition to the library exhibit, the Casper Senior Center is hosting a separate America 250-themed display created by the Casper Doll Collectors Club featuring a variety of dolls.
