A grandfather was seriously injured after being tossed 8 feet in the air by a bull bison at Yellowstone National Park. The incident occurred on July 10 at the Bridge Bay Campground, where the grandfather and his grandson were enjoying an evening stroll.
Details of the Incident
According to Bozeman photographer Mike MacLeod, who witnessed the incident, the bull bison charged at the grandfather and his grandson without provocation. The grandfather, identified as Carl McDaniel, was able to save his grandson’s life by being the target of the bison’s attack.
MacLeod, a former combat photographer, said he stopped filming immediately and, along with other men in the campground, moved towards McDaniel and attempted to scare the bison away. The EMTs arrived quickly and took McDaniel to the nearest medical facility, where he underwent surgery for breaks to his femur.
MacLeod emphasized that neither the grandfather nor the grandson did anything to provoke the bison, and they kept their distance. He also noted that the bison’s behavior was unpredictable, even for someone with his experience in wildlife biology.
