Back-to-School Haircuts

A recent survey by Sport Clips Haircuts found that 94% of parents believe their son’s appearance affects his confidence. As the new school year approaches, many parents are taking their sons to get a fresh haircut, with over a third of preteen and teen boys asking for a back-to-school haircut.

Importance of Appearance

According to the survey, 84% of parents say that by the time their son reaches middle or high school, he cares significantly or somewhat more about his appearance. This is likely due to the pressure to fit in with peers and express their identity. In fact, 71% of parents surveyed say that boys today face more pressure to look put together going into a new school year than they remember from their own school years.

Many boys are inspired by celebrities, athletes, or people they follow online when it comes to choosing a haircut. The survey found that 30% of boys want a tapered fade, while 24% prefer a classic cut. Only 10% of boys are requesting a longer or shaggy style.

Parental Involvement

While some parents may think that they have a significant say in their son’s haircut, the survey found that over half of boys ages 11 to 17 know exactly what haircut they want to get before the school year begins. Parents report that giving their son the choice to pick what’s right for them can be a great opportunity to boost their confidence.

The survey also found that 95% of parents say there is a connection between how confident their son feels about his appearance and how he shows up at school, in sports, and social activities. This highlights the importance of parents being involved in their son’s life and helping them make choices that can positively impact their confidence.
