Fire crews are working to contain a 55-acre wildfire burning roughly 16 miles south of Cottage Grove on land protected by the Oregon Department of Forestry.
Firefighting Efforts
The Harness 1310 Fire, initially named Big Baldy Fire, ignited in the early afternoon of Tuesday, Aug. 11 and quickly spread to more than 50 acres within hours, fueled by timber and logging debris, according to Jessica Neujahr, an Oregon Department of Forestry public information officer.
No homes are currently threatened, and the fire is about halfway between Eugene and Roseburg, in the Cascade foothills near the border of Lane and Douglas counties. It’s the biggest wildfire of the season thus far in Lane County.
The Department of Forestry and the Douglas Forest Protective Association are working together on the blaze, along with an operator representing Weyerhaeuser, which owns timberland in the area.
The response from both agencies includes three bulldozers, nine engines, multiple water tenders, a 15-person hand crew, seven helicopters, and an air attack plane — which coordinates operations from above.
The fire’s cause is still under investigation, and additional information on the fire’s size, containment levels, and cause will be released as it becomes available.
