Alabama Crimson Tide names sophomore Keelon Russell starting quarterback for 2026 season

Tuscaloosa, Ala. – The University of Alabama confirmed this morning that sophomore quarterback Keelon Russell will lead the Crimson Tide offense in the 2026 season. The announcement, made through the school’s NIL organization Yea Alabama, marks a significant shift for the program after former starter Ty Simpson was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL draft.

Russell earns the starting role

Russell entered the competition with veteran backup Austin Mack, who has been with head coach Kalen DeBoer since their time together at Washington. Both quarterbacks hoped to fill the void left by Simpson, but the coaching staff ultimately chose Russell based on his performance and potential.

Russell was a five‑star recruit out of Duncanville High School in Texas, ranked as the second‑highest quarterback in his class nationwide. He helped lead Duncanville to two Texas state championships and earned the Gatorade National Player of the Year award, highlighting his pedigree before arriving in Tuscaloosa.

Freshman contributions and early promise

As a true freshman last season, Russell appeared in two games, completing 11 of 15 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Most of his production came against Eastern Illinois, where Alabama’s coaches named him offensive player of the week. Those early flashes suggested the talent that would later earn him the starting job.

What this means for Alabama’s season

Alabama enters the 2026 campaign ranked No. 13 in the AP Top 25 preseason poll. The team opens its schedule on September 5 with a home game against East Carolina, slated for an 11 a.m. CDT kickoff on ABC 32. With Russell at the helm, fans and analysts will watch to see if the Crimson Tide can improve on last year’s playoff run, which ended in a 38‑3 loss to Indiana in the quarterfinals.

Coach DeBoer praised Russell’s work ethic and leadership during the preseason. “Keelon brings confidence and poise to the field,” DeBoer said. “He’s ready to take the next step and help our offense execute at the highest level.”

Background on the competition

Austin Mack, now the team’s primary backup, spent four years under DeBoer’s system, first at Washington and then at Alabama. He served as Simpson’s immediate understudy and saw action when Simpson was injured during the Rose Bowl. Mack’s experience provides depth, but the coaching staff believes Russell offers the upside needed to compete for a national title.

Russell’s selection also reflects a broader trend in college football of younger quarterbacks earning starting roles earlier in their careers, a shift that aligns with the sport’s increasing emphasis on dynamic, dual‑threat offenses.

Looking ahead

Alabama supporters will have the chance to see Russell’s skill set in action throughout the season, beginning with the season‑opening matchup against East Carolina. If the Crimson Tide can capitalize on Russell’s talent and the coaching staff’s experience, the program could return to the College Football Playoff and contend for another national championship.
