Cross Lake, a vital part of Shreveport’s landscape, is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The lake was created in 1926 to provide a reliable source of clean drinking water for the city’s growing population.
History of Cross Lake
Before the lake’s creation, the area was dry land with farms and homes. The construction of the lake transformed the region and provided a source of recreation for residents. According to LSU Shreveport Professor Emeritus Gary Joiner, the lakebed still holds many secrets, including remnants of old farms, houses, and even a sunken tank from World War II military exercises.
The lake has played a significant role in the city’s history, including its use as a site for military training during World War II. A B-26 bomber accidentally landed in the lake during a training exercise, and the aircraft was never recovered.
Modern-Day Cross Lake
Today, Cross Lake serves as both a source of drinking water and a popular spot for recreation. The annual Cross Lake Floatilla, a tradition that has brought boaters together for 35 years, is a testament to the lake’s enduring appeal. As the reservoir approaches its 100th anniversary, Cross Lake remains a beloved part of Shreveport’s identity.
