Indiana Lawmakers Back Fort Wayne’s 122nd Fighter Wing

Fort Wayne, Indiana’s 122nd Fighter Wing has gained statewide support in its bid to become a future home for the F-35A fighter aircraft. The entire Indiana congressional delegation is urging the U.S. Air Force to consider the 122nd Fighter Wing for this opportunity.

Lawmakers Highlight the Wing’s Capabilities

In a letter to Air Force Secretary Dr. Troy Meink, lawmakers pointed to the 122nd Fighter Wing’s successful transition from the A-10 Thunderbolt II to the F-16 Fighting Falcon. The delegation, led by U.S. Senator Todd Young and Congressman Marlin Stutzman, argued that this transition demonstrates the unit’s ability to modernize and operate advanced aircraft.

The lawmakers also emphasized the strong relationship between the 122nd Fighter Wing and the Fort Wayne community, highlighting the wing’s high manning and retention rates. The 122nd currently maintains a manning level of 108% and a retention rate exceeding 90%.

Indiana’s Growing Role in Defense and Aviation

The delegation noted Indiana’s growing role as a national hub for uncrewed aerial systems, advanced manufacturing, and military technology development. They argued that pairing the F-35 mission with Indiana’s expanding defense and aviation infrastructure would further strengthen the nation’s military readiness.
