Wyoming’s Governor Mark Gordon recently discussed the international and national data center boom and the concerns over energy and water on a local radio talk show.
Data Center Boom
Governor Gordon noted that Wyoming can provide the necessary energy for data centers. He also addressed the water issue, citing a recent tour of an expanding Microsoft data center near Cheyenne, which uses a closed-loop system for cooling water.
The governor also discussed the potential risks of data centers failing and going bankrupt, leaving behind empty buildings. He proposed a reclamation process, similar to those used in the coal, gas, oil, wind, and solar industries, where companies would set aside funds for potential cleanup.
Wyoming Rules and Regulations
Governor Gordon emphasized that data centers in Wyoming would be subject to state rules and regulations, which could be written to address concerns over energy and water usage. He also noted that while data centers may not employ many people, they could provide significant tax revenue to low-population counties.
