Tenderloin ‘Safe Zone’ Planned

The Tenderloin Community Action Plan’s proposed ‘safe zone’ is moving forward, with plans to create a safer environment for families and children in the area. The idea is modeled after the Harlem Children’s Zone in New York City and will cover over a dozen square blocks with a high concentration of families, children, and youth services.

Details of the Plan

Esan Looper of the Tenderloin Community Benefit District, who is involved in the planning stages, says the groups involved are ‘in the process of aligning’ on the finer details of the plan this month. The plan includes safety measures like expanded street cleaning, increased police presence, signage identifying the area, murals, and programs for kids.

Sunday Streets will kick off in the Tenderloin this weekend, despite having its funding slashed by the Department of Public Health this spring. The event will feature a talent show, lip sync battle, and a drag queen roasting public figures, among other activities.
