The Plano City Council has approved $8.5 million in funding for traffic light vehicle detection upgrades at 284 intersections across the city. The new systems will enable traffic signals to recognize when vehicles are stopped at an intersection, helping to prevent unnecessary delays.
Improved Traffic Flow and Reduced Maintenance
The upgrades will also improve signal timing, support more reliable traffic flow, and reduce maintenance costs for outdated and failing equipment. According to Public Works Community Investment Program Manager Drew Zaeske, the new system will provide the city’s engineering and police departments with real-time traffic conditions and construction impacts during emergencies.
The upgraded intersections will offer full visibility of the four sides of an intersection, including vehicle and pedestrian counts, traffic signal performance metrics, fine-tuned signal timing, and citywide signal coordination. The funds for the upgrades come from the city’s 2025-26 Street Improvement Community Investment Program, which was largely funded by the city’s 2021 bond.
