Magnolia ISD is set to implement a new transportation management system, SMART tag, for the 2026-27 school year. The system was presented to the district’s board of trustees by Chief Support Services Officer Joe Dives at their May 12 meeting.
How it Works
SMART tag utilizes student radio-frequency identification cards, RFID readers, tablets, and an app to monitor bus activity. The system features electronic seating charts, pre-trip inspection, turn-by-turn navigation, authorized and unauthorized loading/unloading, and authorized guardian pickup.
The transportation department will be able to track bus routes in real-time and receive emergency notifications in case of an accident. Parents will also have access to their child’s transportation schedule and bus location through the app.
Benefits and Costs
According to Dives, the system will benefit students, parents, bus drivers, campuses, and the district as a whole. The initial cost to enact SMART tag is approximately $342,320, which will cover equipment, tablets, tablet charging stations, ID card printer, GPS, and staff training.
The system is expected to be fully operational by the first day of the 2026-27 school year, including special education buses and GPS on the district’s fleet vehicles.
