In a world where technology is increasingly intertwined with our daily lives, a disturbing trend is emerging: the erosion of our freedom. The introduction of digital ID, touted as a convenient and secure way to verify our identities, poses a significant threat to our autonomy and privacy. As Hannah Roth, founder of RejectDigitalID.org, puts it, ‘If I don’t do something, my little grandson is going to have a life of servitude. He’s going to be a slave, and he’s not even going to know it.’
The Rise of Digital ID
Roth’s concerns about digital ID are rooted in its potential to create a centralized database of our personal information, including financial transactions, social media activity, and even our health records. This information can be shared with governments, corporations, and other entities, potentially leading to a loss of control over our own lives. As Roth notes, ‘They have all of your data and information that’s related to bank transactions, to what you do on social media, to maybe emails and text conversations that you’ve had that Google and Apple feed into this big mechanism.’
The Surveillance State
The implications of digital ID are far-reaching and alarming. With the ability to track our every move, governments and corporations can exert significant control over our lives. As Roth warns, ‘If you are accused of wrong think, which people are like wrong think, that’s just in the sci-fi novels. Nope. That’s happening today all over the world.’ The consequences of this surveillance state are already being felt, with individuals being accused of ‘wrong think’ and facing severe penalties.
A Call to Action
Roth’s message is clear: we must take action to protect our freedom and privacy. As she urges, ‘Get off your butt. Stop sharing fear porn. Fear, Porn, Not Action. Fear, Porn, Not Action. Save yourself. Start growing. Build in your state.’ The time to act is now, before the landscape becomes even more difficult to change. As Roth emphasizes, ‘Now is the time to start because one year from now this thing is moving, rolling out so rapidly that if people don’t get started now, in one year, the landscape is going to be something that’s going to be even harder to change.’
In a recent conversation with Sean Patrick Tario, host of the series Digital Privacy and Your Life, Roth shared her insights and concerns about digital ID. Her passion and dedication to this cause are a testament to the importance of protecting our freedom and privacy in the digital age.
The fight against digital ID is not just about technology; it’s about our fundamental human rights. As Roth so eloquently puts it, ‘I just did not want to take this on because this is just a ton of work, right? But I thought to myself, there’s going to come a day I’m going to have a conversation with him and I’m either going to say, my mom did everything she could, or I’m going to say, I’m sorry, honey. I sold freedom down the tubes because I just did nothing, right?’ The choice is ours: we can choose to act, to fight for our freedom, or we can succumb to the forces of control. The future of our society depends on it.
