New Braunfels Mayoral, City Council Races Head to Runoff

Voters in New Braunfels will head to the polls on June 13 to determine the winners of the mayoral and city council races. The top two candidates in each race will face off in a runoff election after none of them earned the necessary 50% + one vote to win outright in the May 2 election.

Mayoral Race

The mayoral contest is a rematch of the 2023 election, with incumbent Mayor Neal Linnartz facing off against Michael Alexander French. French was initially declared the winner of the May 2 election, but the city later reversed course and announced a runoff after realizing that the city’s charter was at odds with the Texas Constitution.

The Texas Constitution requires that offices with terms longer than two years be elected by a majority vote. The city’s charter, however, allowed for a plurality vote. The city has since corrected its mistake and will hold a runoff election to determine the winner.

City Council Race

In the District 6 City Council race, Nikki L. Shaw and incumbent April Ryan will face each other in the runoff. Shaw and Ryan earned the most votes in the May 2 election, but neither garnered enough to win outright.

Voters in other parts of Texas will also be heading to the polls on June 13. In Bexar County, voters will decide the Alamo Colleges Board of Trustees District 9 race, while in Val Verde County, voters will choose a new mayor for Del Rio.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on June 13. Voters are encouraged to cast their ballots and have their say in the outcome of these important local races.
