Florida Cracks Down on Medicaid Fraud

Florida is taking a major step to combat Medicaid fraud with a new integrity initiative announced by Governor Ron DeSantis. The initiative aims to stop scams before they happen and keep taxpayer money focused on eligible residents. As part of the effort, the state will temporarily pause new enrollments for certain high-risk healthcare businesses, including durable medical equipment suppliers and adult day care centers, while tightening its screening process.

Enhanced Screening and Monitoring

In addition to the temporary enrollment freeze, every active Medicaid provider in Florida will be required to revalidate their identity and credentials. Those who fail to meet the updated standards or ignore the rule will be removed from the program entirely. The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) is partnering with a tech company called SentiLink to use advanced software that can spot synthetic identities, hidden ownership structures, and stolen identities at the front door. The state agency is also increasing its monitoring of billing claims to catch suspicious patterns and assist law enforcement in their investigations.

Medicaid is designed to provide healthcare for vulnerable residents, including children, pregnant women, and seniors. AHCA Secretary Shevaun Harris emphasized that financial theft directly impacts those who rely on the program most, stating, “Every dollar stolen through fraudulent schemes is one less dollar available to meet the needs of those who actually need the medical care.” The state’s move aligns with a growing national push to clean up Medicaid, following recent federal guidelines from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services under the Trump Administration that urge states to ramp up their oversight and improve provider screening.
