Joe Gonzalez, an 18-year-old senior from Lincoln High School in Dallas, is set to make history as the first student-athlete from Dallas ISD to earn an international soccer scholarship. Gonzalez will attend the University of Central Lancashire in England this fall, where he plans to study sports business while continuing his soccer career with Macclesfield Football Club.
A Milestone Achievement
This opportunity is a significant milestone for Gonzalez, who is also the first student in Lincoln High School’s history to receive a soccer scholarship. Initially committed to another school, Gonzalez changed his plans after realizing the potential of this international opportunity. “Once I heard them out, my mind just knew that was a better decision and a bigger opportunity,” he shared.
Gonzalez, who is the salutatorian of Lincoln’s Class of 2026, expressed gratitude for the chance to study and play abroad, aligning with his long-term goals. “I’m going to get my bachelor’s in the UK, to the University of Central Lancashire, and it’s all new, all great,” he said, attributing his success to divine guidance.
Family and Faith
Soccer is deeply rooted in Gonzalez’s family history. His mother was a team captain, his father a goalie, and his uncle played semi-professionally in Querétaro, Mexico. Despite a rocky start in sixth grade, Gonzalez’s dedication saw him rise to varsity by his freshman year at Lincoln, where he played a pivotal role in leading the team to its first state tournament appearance.
Off the field, Gonzalez credits Lincoln’s B-tech program for helping him earn both a high school diploma and an associate degree, as he prepares to become a first-generation college student. “The goal is to do the best I can,” Gonzalez said, aiming to make his family proud and dedicating his achievements to God.
Coaching and Community Impact
Lincoln soccer coach Stanley Haines praised Gonzalez’s dedication and integrity, qualities that have significantly elevated the school’s soccer program. “I don’t think I can ever replace Joe,” Haines remarked, highlighting Gonzalez’s impact in a school traditionally focused on basketball.
As Gonzalez looks forward to his time in England, he is eager to immerse himself in the culture and further his soccer career. “I’m excited to discover everything there; the food, the culture, and especially the soccer games,” he said, anticipating the vibrant soccer culture in England.
