In a significant step for downtown Greensburg, Indiana, local leaders and developers have commenced construction on Ironwood, an 88-unit apartment complex. This development is set to replace the former Decatur County Jail site, transforming an underutilized area into vibrant, market-rate housing. The project is expected to be completed by summer 2027.
Mayor Joshua Marsh emphasized the importance of this development for southeastern Indiana, highlighting the high demand for diverse housing options. ‘Our need for housing here in southeastern Indiana is high,’ Mayor Marsh stated. ‘This project is something our administration has been working on since 2020, and we’re excited to see these units come online to help fill that gap.’
The Ironwood project is a result of strategic collaboration between local and state entities. The Greensburg Redevelopment Commission initially acquired the property in 2021, and the city leveraged regional READI grant funding through the Accelerate Rural Indiana region to stimulate investment.
Nassif Kouton from the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) noted that Ironwood exemplifies the state’s investment strategies aimed at fostering public-private partnerships. ‘Projects like Ironwood help communities like Greensburg attract investment, support local employers, and create vibrant places for people to live and work,’ Kouton said.
Beyond its physical structure, Ironwood is seen as a catalyst for economic growth, focusing on attracting and retaining a skilled workforce. The complex is designed to accommodate ‘boomerang residents’—those returning after college—and short-term professionals, such as medical staff and interns from Honda Manufacturing of Indiana.
Mayor Marsh concluded, ‘We are focused on retention and attraction in our city. Whether you’re here for maybe three months or choosing Greensburg to be home, Ironwood is a great place for them to be.’
Iron Men Properties, based in Lafayette, Indiana, will maintain ownership of the complex through Teays Valley Property Management. The company specializes in revitalizing downtown areas by developing and managing multifamily housing communities across Indiana.
