The Obama Presidential Center, a sprawling 20-acre campus on Chicago’s South Side, opens to the public on Juneteenth. This significant date marks the unveiling of a project that reflects both the political and personal sides of former President Barack Obama, the nation’s first Black president.
A Community-Centric Campus
Located near where Obama began his political career and taught law, the center is designed to be more than just a museum. It features a library, a basketball court, and a picnic area, all open to the public. The center aims to be a place for community gathering and reflection, encouraging visitors to think about the change they can bring to their own neighborhoods.
Josh Harris, the Obama Foundation’s vice president of public engagement, emphasized the center’s role as a safe space for reflection on Obama’s presidency and campaigns. The center is expected to draw up to 1 million visitors annually.
Innovative Exhibits and Attractions
The museum within the center is the first fully digital presidential museum, offering high-tech and hands-on exhibits. A life-sized replica of the Oval Office allows visitors to sit behind the Resolute Desk, fostering a sense of possibility and inspiration.
Exhibits cover key moments from Obama’s presidency, including the Affordable Care Act and immigration policies. Personal touches, such as a clip of Obama singing “Amazing Grace” during a eulogy, are also featured.
Design and Accessibility
The center’s design reflects the Obamas’ tastes and love of history. The campus includes commissioned artworks and spaces named after prominent figures like John Lewis. A new Chicago Public Library branch on the campus features a mural depicting literary figures, with a young Obama represented in the artwork.
While tickets for the museum are priced at $30, the highest among U.S. presidential museums, most of the campus remains free to the public. This includes access to the playground, library, and grilling area, ensuring the center is accessible to as many people as possible.
