SpaceX to Build $100 Billion Spaceport in Vermilion Parish, Creating 3,000 Jobs

ABBEVILLE, La. – Governor Jeff Landry celebrated a major economic win for Louisiana on Tuesday, unveiling a $100 billion partnership with SpaceX to construct the nation’s largest spaceport on 125,000 acres of former Exxon property in Vermilion Parish. The announcement, made at a special event on the state Capitol steps, highlighted the project’s potential to transform the region’s economy and reinforce America’s leadership in space.

State Support and Tax Incentives

Landry likened the impact of the new launch complex to the historic 1803 Louisiana Purchase, calling the deal “nothing short of a transformational moment.” State lawmakers have already approved a sizable package of tax incentives to attract the private‑sector investment, underscoring the administration’s commitment to job creation and technological advancement.

Location and Capabilities

The site will sit on the Gulf Coast, roughly 200 miles west of New Orleans, providing direct access to abundant natural‑gas supplies and a wide range of launch trajectories. SpaceX President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell addressed the gathering via video, emphasizing that the facility will be the company’s fourth and largest launch site, designed to support its reusable Starship system.

According to a release from Louisiana Economic Development, the spaceport could handle thousands of launches each year, dramatically expanding the nation’s satellite‑deployment capacity and reinforcing national security objectives.

Job Growth and Community Outreach

The agreement projects the creation of about 3,000 jobs over the next ten years, spanning construction, operations, and ancillary services. SpaceX has pledged to keep much of the acreage undeveloped, committing resources to coastal restoration and erosion control. Shotwell said the company will work with local officials to “ensure that this land doesn’t disappear,” reflecting a partnership approach to environmental stewardship.

In the coming months, SpaceX plans to hold town‑hall meetings and other community‑engagement events to keep residents informed and involved in the project’s progress.

Environmental Concerns

Environmental advocacy groups, including the Louisiana Bucket Brigade, voiced caution about the rapid pace of development. Director Anne Rolfes warned that the project could “irrevocably alter” the fragile coastline and called for transparent public hearings. She urged that the process be “thoughtfully done” to give residents ample time to understand the implications.

State officials responded that the project will include robust environmental safeguards and that the company’s restoration commitments will help mitigate coastal loss.

Financial Milestone for SpaceX

Earlier this year, SpaceX completed its initial public offering, the largest ever for the company, with shares briefly reaching $225 each and briefly making Elon Musk a trillionaire. The IPO provides the capital needed to fund the ambitious spaceport and further accelerate the company’s commercial launch schedule.

Overall, the partnership between Louisiana and SpaceX represents a significant investment in the state’s future, promising high‑tech jobs, increased federal revenue, and a stronger position for the United States in the global space arena.
