Oklahoma Sooners linebacker Kip Lewis seeks national recognition in senior season

Oklahoma senior linebacker Kip Lewis is gearing up for his final season with the Sooners, hoping to turn the spotlight on his on‑field production. The 6‑foot‑1, 235‑pound defensive leader hails from Carthage, Texas, and recorded a team‑high 76 tackles last season, including 10.5 tackles for loss.

Proving himself on a national stage

Lewis says he feels overlooked by national award voters despite his consistent play. “I don’t really get recognized nationally, so I kind of make that my effort now to let them know that it’s a little BS,” he told KOCO 5. The linebacker added that the perceived slight fuels his competitive fire, giving him “a chip on my shoulder” that pushes him to bring his A‑game every snap.

His senior year follows a 2024 campaign in which he posted 65 tackles, four sacks, and two interception returns for touchdowns against powerhouse programs Auburn and Alabama. Those highlights earned him spots on three prestigious preseason watch lists: the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, the Butkus Award, and the Chuck Bednarik Award.

Leadership on and off the field

Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables praised Lewis and fellow linebacker Owen Heinecke as “strong leaders” who inspire teammates through consistency and passion. “The best leaders are guys that can get guys around them to do the hardest things, and they certainly have been able to do that,” Venables said. “They’ve got a great trust and respect from their teammates. The trust is something you can’t buy; it’s earned over a period of time.”

Heinecke, who logged 74 tackles and 12 tackles for loss last season, echoed the sentiment, calling the perceived lack of recognition “unwarranted.” He added, “He’s proved for four years that he is a starting linebacker in the SEC and one of the best linebackers in the country. When Kip gets on those lists, it’s well deserved, and when he’s not, we think he should be up there.”

Friendship fuels competition

The duo’s chemistry has become a talking point among fans and analysts. Heinecke described their dynamic as “yin and yang,” noting his own level‑headed style balances Lewis’s high‑energy approach. “He brings energy, he brings passion, all the things that you want out of somebody that you’re playing next to,” Heinecke said. “He tracks 8,000 yards at practice because he’s just pacing the field up and down the whole time.”

Lewis returned the compliment, saying Heinecke pushes him to improve daily. “When he steps his game up I just know I’ve got to bring mine also,” Lewis said.

Looking ahead

As the Sooners prepare for the 2026 season, Lewis hopes his senior campaign will solidify his case for postseason honors and attract the attention of NFL scouts. With the team’s defense ranked among the nation’s best, his performance could be a key factor in Oklahoma’s pursuit of conference and national titles.

Fans across Oklahoma and Texas will be watching closely, hoping the senior’s dedication translates into both personal accolades and team success.
