Bardstown preschool eye exam discovers rare eye cancer, boy returns to school

When Hayden Rouse was three, his mother, Terra Rouse, took him to a routine preschool eye exam in Bardstown, Kentucky, to check a hemangioma. During the exam the doctor felt a mass and identified a large tumor in the child’s eye.

“It was a very large tumor, unfortunately, but it was in a spot that allowed us to give arterial chemotherapy,” Terra Rouse said. The diagnosis was retinoblastoma, a rare childhood eye cancer that can be cured if caught early.

Treatment journey

Hayden and his family traveled to Wisconsin for specialized care. Chemotherapy successfully eliminated the tumor but caused side effects, including shrinkage of the eye and blurred vision. On July 29, Hayden underwent surgery to remove the affected eye. “He wore his Spider‑Man costume to the operating room,” his father, Hayden Rouse, recalled, adding that the procedure went smoothly.

Following surgery, the Rouse family celebrated a milestone common to many cancer survivors: ringing the hospital bell. “He’s not missed a beat. Within two days of coming home he was running, playing, jumping – all the things a typical four‑year‑old does,” Rouse said. “We’ve gotten Hayden back, and that has been the biggest thing for me.”

Back to school and community support

Hayden is now back at his preschool, enjoying the everyday activities of a typical four‑year‑old. His mother said a prosthetic eye, engraved with his favorite superhero Spider‑Man, will be fitted in a few weeks.

Dr. Heather Felton of Norton Children’s Hospital emphasized the importance of required preschool eye exams. “We do these exams to catch abnormalities in the eye, ear, heart or even a mass in the abdomen. Without the exam, Hayden’s cancer might not have been discovered for months,” she explained.

To help the Rouse family with medical expenses, the community is organizing the “Buck Haven” car show on October 17 in New Haven, Kentucky. All car owners are welcome to enter, and proceeds will go directly to the family.

Why routine screenings matter

This story underscores how a simple, mandated preschool vision screening can save a child’s life. Early detection of retinoblastoma dramatically improves outcomes, allowing treatments that preserve overall health and quality of life. Parents are encouraged to keep up with required health checks for their children, as these exams can reveal hidden conditions beyond vision problems.

Hayden’s experience serves as a reminder to families across Kentucky and the nation that routine health checks are a vital part of protecting our children’s future.
