There is a moment, maybe fifteen minutes into a walk along the Campbell Creek Trail, when the sounds of the city simply disappear. Come summer, cyclists share the wide paved sections comfortably with runners and walkers, and the trail connects to a broader network that eventually links up with the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail and other greenways, giving motivated two-wheelers the ability to cover much of the city without touching a road. For visitors without bikes, just lacing up and heading in any direction delivers rewards quickly. Wildflowers push through the understory in June. The light goes on forever in July. Bears, though rarely seen, have been spotted along this corridor too — another reminder that this is not a manicured city park but a genuine slice of Southcentral Alaska wilderness stitched into everyday life.
What makes Campbell Creek Trail stand out is exactly that friction-free accessibility. No reservation, no gear list, no trailhead fee. The closest parking area near the Campbell Creek Estuary on the west end offers a flat, scenic walk suitable for any fitness level, while the eastern stretches closer to the hillside neighborhoods get wilder and more rugged as the elevation rises gently toward the mountains. Pick your adventure accordingly.
If you are visiting Anchorage for even a few days, carve out a morning for this one. Walk as far as you feel like walking, listen to the water, watch the sky, and let the scale of this place sink in quietly. Anchorage has a lot going on — good food, great culture, serious wilderness day trips — but the Campbell Creek Trail is the city at its most honest and unhurried. It is free, it is beautiful, and it is right there waiting for you.
