Wilbur Cross High School in New Haven, Connecticut, recently held its 105th commencement ceremony, where 366 students graduated, including salutatorian Julian Theodore.
A Place of Diversity and Community
Theodore reflected on the school’s unique essence, which encourages students to seek out learning beyond just textbooks. He also spoke about the importance of building relationships with peers from different backgrounds and life experiences.
Theodore’s experience in a carpentry class at the school was particularly meaningful, as he learned valuable lessons about community building and diversity. He was able to connect with his peers, including those who spoke different languages, and gain insight into the challenges they faced, such as immigration and learning a new language.
A Lasting Impact
The school’s principal, Matt Brown, reminded the graduates that they are part of a larger community and have the power to make a positive impact. The ceremony also featured a keynote speech by Alix Guerrier, the CEO of DonorsChoose, who encouraged the graduates to get involved in their community and make a difference.
Other graduates, including Alexis Smith and Nahfisaah Testman, also shared their stories of perseverance and growth during their time at Wilbur Cross High School. The school’s social workers and caring teachers were credited with helping them overcome challenges and achieve their goals.
