As part of a broader effort to improve water quality in Jordan Creek and encourage downtown revitalization, City Utilities will begin environmental remediation of a former manufactured natural gas plant at 333 N. Main Ave in Springfield.
Project Details
The 4.3-acre parcel is located between Grant Avenue and Main Avenue, just west of the Renew Jordan Creek project area. The remediation project, expected to take five to seven months, involves the removal of 22,000 to 30,000 tons of impacted soils and residual materials down to the bedrock, 18-20 feet below the surface grade.
Prior to excavation, a contractor will remove former foundations and concrete. No immediate threat to public health has been identified, according to City Utilities. A temporary structure will be used to control odors during most of the excavation, and City Utilities will work with the city and its contractor to limit impacts to nearby residents and businesses.
Pending final state approvals, work is scheduled to begin in late July, and wrap up in early 2027. Work hours will be from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and some Saturdays at reduced hours.
Public Open House
City Utilities will hold a public open house on Monday, June 29 at the Transit Center’s Community Room, located at 211 N. Main Ave., to discuss the project and answer questions. The meeting will take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
