In Vancouver, Washington, a simple wrong turn during a DoorDash delivery became a life-changing moment for 87-year-old Joe Symonds. Symonds, who has been delivering food to make ends meet, mistakenly arrived at the home of Alyona Dikiy while trying to complete an order. This chance encounter would soon lead to an outpouring of community support.

A Chance Encounter

While cleaning her garage, Dikiy noticed Symonds appeared disoriented and engaged him in conversation. She was surprised to learn that Symonds, at his age, was working to pay off debt and cover essential expenses, including medication. Despite the challenges, Symonds expressed gratitude for the work, though he admitted the physical demands were tough.

“I’ve had a few issues on flat ground where I’ve managed to trip myself and fall down,” Symonds shared. “Fortunately, nothing serious has happened.”

Community Kindness

Moved by Symonds’ story, Dikiy gave him $100 and encouraged him to take the rest of the day off. With his consent, she recorded a brief video and launched a GoFundMe campaign to help him retire. The response was overwhelming, with the fundraiser quickly surpassing $30,000, thanks to donations from around the world.

“Once it was at $400, I was like, ‘Joe, we’re at like $400! You can take a couple days off!'” Dikiy recalled. The generosity of strangers left both Dikiy and Symonds astonished.

Faith in Humanity

Symonds expressed deep gratitude for the kindness shown by people he had never met. “I think you’re the kindest, most fantastic people that I could imagine,” he said. Dikiy, too, was touched by the experience, stating, “I think that a lot of people have really good hearts.”

For Symonds, Dikiy is more than just a stranger he met by chance. “She’s my angel,” he said, reflecting on the unexpected turn of events that brought him hope and relief.
