The first years of a child’s life are crucial, and GEEARS approaches early childhood advocacy holistically. However, a recent study by Schoolhouse Connection shows an increase in the number of young children experiencing homelessness in Georgia, with 13,692 infants and toddlers affected in 2022-2023.
GEEARS’ Response
GEEARS is working to raise awareness about this issue and has launched a Housing Security Committee within its Infant-Toddler Coalition. The organization supported HB 689, which would have established a homelessness prevention program, during Georgia’s 2026 legislative session.
According to Brian Goldstone, author of There is No Place for Us: Working and Homeless in America, homelessness is often invisible and under-documented. Hard-working families with young children are often pushed into this precarious state due to low-wage jobs and unanticipated expenses.
GEEARS encourages Georgians to get involved by signing up for Action Alerts and contacting their elected officials to advocate for policies supporting children and families facing housing insecurity.
