YMCA of Greater San Antonio Opens Fall Youth Sports, Seeks 750 Volunteer Coaches

As families settle into the new school year, the YMCA of Greater San Antonio is ready to get kids moving, learning teamwork and building confidence through its expanded fall youth‑sports lineup.

New programs for the season

This year the Y adds NFL flag football at the Mays Family YMCA locations in Stone Oak, Potranco, O.P. Schnabel Park and the Cibolo Family YMCA. The no‑contact format teaches football fundamentals while stressing teamwork, skill development and sportsmanship in a supportive environment.

The Harvey E. Najim Family YMCA also launches a new youth‑soccer season for children ages three to nine. A brand‑new soccer pitch gives young players another chance to learn the game, practice new skills and grow confidence on the field.

More than just a game

YMCA youth sports are designed to develop character as well as athletic ability. Coaches emphasize positive coaching, inclusive participation and the values of respect and responsibility. Whether a child is trying a sport for the first time or returning for another season, the program aims to help young athletes grow both on and off the field.

For families, these programs also strengthen community bonds by bringing together children, parents and volunteers from neighborhoods across Greater San Antonio.

Volunteer coaches needed

The YMCA hopes to recruit 750 volunteer coaches to support its youth teams this fall. Parents, grandparents, former athletes and other community members are invited to serve, and no prior coaching experience is required. Volunteers receive training and ongoing support so they can lead, encourage and positively influence young athletes throughout the season.

A great coach can make an impact that lasts far beyond the final whistle, shaping the next generation of responsible, confident citizens.

How to register and get involved

Late registration runs from August 18 through September 1, with a last‑call window from September 1 to October 2. Space may be limited by sport and location, so families are encouraged to register early.

To explore available sports, locations and registration details, visit the YMCA’s website. Community members interested in coaching can complete the YMCA Volunteer Coach Interest Form online.

This fall, there’s a place for everyone at the Y—whether stepping onto the field, cheering from the sidelines or helping lead the next generation.
