Gov. Abbott asks SBA for disaster aid for Bexar County after August windstorm

Governor Greg Abbott is pressing the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) to issue a disaster declaration for Bexar County after the August 28 windstorm that battered the San Antonio area with straight‑line winds. If the SBA approves the request, homeowners, renters and businesses that suffered damage not fully covered by insurance will be able to apply for low‑interest federal loans.

Local impact of the August storm

The windstorm ripped through Bexar County, toppling trees, damaging roofs and knocking out electricity to more than 110,000 customers at its peak. Tens of thousands remained without power for several days, prompting widespread calls for assistance.

Assessments show eligibility

Abbott’s office said that assessments conducted by local, state and federal officials confirmed that Bexar County meets the federal threshold for SBA disaster assistance. “This request to the SBA will deliver critical resources to Texans whose homes and businesses took damage in the August storms,” Abbott said.

Separate FEMA request under review

The SBA request is distinct from a pending FEMA Public Assistance application that addresses severe storms and flooding in July. President Donald Trump approved FEMA Public Assistance for 19 Texas counties last week, but Bexar County and eight other counties remain under review.

How residents can get help

Texans affected by the August windstorm can continue to report damage through the state’s iSTAT damage survey, a tool officials use to document the extent of disaster damage. Once the SBA declaration is granted, qualified applicants will be able to submit loan applications through the SBA’s disaster loan program.

Why the declaration matters

Disaster loans provide vital financial relief for those whose insurance coverage falls short, helping families rebuild homes and businesses restore operations. The low‑interest terms make repayment more manageable for those still recovering from the storm’s effects.

Looking ahead

Local officials are monitoring the situation closely and will update residents as the SBA decision progresses. In the meantime, community leaders are encouraging affected residents to document losses promptly through iSTAT to ensure they receive the assistance they need.
