Churchyard Grapes and Old-World Charm: Spokane’s Townshend Cellar Is a Weekend Ritual Worth Adopting

There is a particular kind of Saturday afternoon that Spokane does better than almost any city in the Pacific Northwest, and it usually involves stepping off a sun-warmed sidewalk into somewhere cool, dimly lit, and quietly magnificent. For my money, that somewhere is Barrister Winery’s downtown tasting room, tucked inside a gorgeously repurposed 1899 warehouse on West Pacific Avenue in the heart of Spokane’s evolving warehouse district.

Let’s establish something right away: Barrister is not a precious, fussy wine experience. There are no white tablecloths, no hushed tones, no sommelier peering over your shoulder waiting to correct your pronunciation. What you get instead is exposed brick that has been standing since before the automobile, soaring timber ceilings that make you feel genuinely small in the best possible way, and pours of serious, award-winning red wine served by people who actually love what they’re talking about.

The winery was founded in 2001 by two Spokane attorneys — hence the name — who had the good sense to plant their flag in Washington’s incredible Columbia Valley wine country and bottle it for neighbors who deserved better than whatever was collecting dust at the grocery store. More than two decades later, Barrister has earned a devoted regional following, and their downtown tasting room has become one of those rare places that locals consider genuinely theirs.

The wine list leans heavily into bold, structured reds: a Cabernet Sauvignon that is plush and unhurried, a Merlot with more backbone than you might expect, and a Petite Sirah that is frankly one of the more exciting bottles coming out of Eastern Washington right now. They also produce a Cabernet Franc and a beautifully blended reserve program that rewards anyone curious enough to ask what’s currently pouring from the back. The tasting fee is modest, and the pours are generous — a combination that should be legally required everywhere.

The space itself is worth the visit even before a single glass is raised. Natural light filters through tall industrial windows and falls across long communal tables where strangers become friends by the second flight. On weekends, there’s often live music drifting through the room — nothing that competes with conversation, just enough to remind you that you are somewhere with a genuine sense of place.

The warehouse district surrounding Barrister has become one of Spokane’s more interesting neighborhoods to wander: a mix of art studios, independent restaurants, and working buildings that haven’t been scrubbed into anonymity. Walking there from Riverfront Park takes about ten minutes and takes you past some of the most honest urban architecture the city has to offer.

If you time your visit right — and by right I mean a Friday or Saturday afternoon when the room fills gradually and the light goes amber through those tall windows — you’ll understand why regulars treat this place less like a tasting room and more like a standing appointment. Bring someone worth talking to, plan to stay longer than you intended, and order a glass of whatever the person behind the counter is most excited about that day. In my experience, that approach has never once led me wrong at Barrister.

Find them at 1213 W. Railroad Avenue in downtown Spokane. Check their website for current hours, as seasonal scheduling applies. No reservation required for standard tastings — just show up and settle in.
