Wyoming Department of Education Opens Applications for Inaugural Patriot School Awards

The Wyoming Department of Education announced Monday that applications are open for the inaugural Wyoming Patriot Schools program. Developed in partnership with members of the Citizenship Stakeholder Cabinet, the initiative is part of the state’s effort, alongside the Wyoming 250th Committee, to promote and recognize patriotism in Wyoming schools.

Program goals and criteria

According to the department, the Patriot Schools program advances civic education by celebrating schools that go above and beyond in fostering community, country, and character. Participating schools can earn either the Wyoming Patriot School designation or a Distinguished Recognition, based on performance across four key categories. While the exact categories were not listed in the release, they are intended to highlight schools that prepare students to be informed, engaged, and responsible members of society.

How to apply

Schools interested in joining the program should visit the Wyoming Patriot Schools webpage, download the guidebook, and complete the online application. The guidebook provides detailed information on eligibility, required documentation, and the evaluation process. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but schools are encouraged to submit early to ensure timely review before the award ceremony.

Award ceremony

The inaugural awardees will be recognized on Veterans Day, November 11, during a ceremony that will highlight the achievements of the honored schools and underscore the importance of civic virtue in education. The event is expected to draw educators, parents, and community leaders from across the state.

Local impact

For Wyoming’s many small towns and rural districts, the Patriot Schools program offers a valuable opportunity to showcase local pride and commitment to the nation’s founding principles. By highlighting schools that excel in civic instruction, the program aligns with the values of families and faith‑based communities that prioritize character development alongside academic achievement.

Next steps for schools

Educators are urged to review the program guidebook, assess their current civic‑education offerings, and consider how they might meet the Patriot Schools criteria. The department has pledged to provide technical assistance to schools throughout the application process, ensuring that even those with limited resources can compete for recognition.
