Wylie ISD trustees met Monday, May 18 at the Montgomery Center at Wylie High School to approve staff raises, adopt district legislative priorities and recognize both parent groups and student achievers from across the district. The meeting highlighted the district’s focus on supporting employees and celebrating student success, with PTA honors and awards for competitions ranging from Future Problem Solvers to SkillsUSA. Multiple campuses, including Wylie High School and Wylie East, were singled out for their students’ accomplishments.
Trustees moved forward with a staff pay increase intended to bolster teacher retention and reward district employees for their work this year. Alongside compensation action, the board adopted a slate of legislative priorities meant to guide how the district will engage with lawmakers and state education policy. Those priorities will shape Wylie ISD’s advocacy efforts as the next legislative session approaches.
The meeting opened with recognitions for several parent-teacher associations that earned statewide honors, showing strong community involvement at the elementary and intermediate levels. Cox Elementary, Whitt Elementary, Watkins Elementary and Harrison Intermediate PTAs were each acknowledged for earning the Texas PTA’s Platinum Voice for Every Child Award. Cramer Elementary also qualified for the award but will receive its recognition at a future board meeting after meeting the submission deadline.
Dozens of students were called forward for recognition, representing a wide range of extracurricular and academic programs across the district. Honors covered accomplishments in Future Problem Solvers, the SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference and multiple all-state competitions. Students from Wylie High School, Wylie East High School, McMillan Junior High School, Cooper Junior High School and Davis Intermediate School were among those celebrated for their achievements.
The Montgomery Center served as a fitting venue for the evening, with family members and school staff in attendance to applaud participants and hear board business. The atmosphere mixed practical governance with community celebration, as trustees balanced routine decisions with public acknowledgments. That balance underlined the district’s dual role of managing operations while spotlighting student and volunteer contributions.
Approving staff raises sends a clear signal about district priorities without tying the board to specifics that could distract from long-term planning. Trustees framed the move as part of a broader effort to remain competitive in recruiting educators and support personnel. By pairing compensation decisions with legislative priorities, the board aimed to address both immediate needs and systemic issues that affect classrooms.
The student recognitions showcased the depth of programs available to Wylie ISD learners, from problem-solving competitions to skills-based leadership opportunities. Participation in events like SkillsUSA and all-state contests gives students real-world experience, whether they are developing technical skills or performing at high artistic levels. Those successes reflect coordination between teachers, coaches and families that help students reach higher goals.
