Wylie City Council approves $183.5M budget, raises property tax rate

Wylie, Texas – In a decisive 6‑0 vote on Tuesday, September 8, the Wylie City Council adopted the city’s fiscal year 2026‑27 budget, allocating $183,481,790 across operating, debt‑service and capital funds. The council also approved a property‑tax rate of $0.596554 per $100 of assessed valuation, a slight rise of just over five cents from the prior year.

Why the modest tax increase matters

Finance Director Melissa Brown explained that Wylie’s overall assessed valuation fell by roughly $100 million, prompting a modest upward adjustment to the “no‑new‑revenue” tax rate—an increase of a little more than one cent. The additional revenue helps cover higher maintenance and operations costs and supports debt obligations tied to the city’s 2021 voter‑approved bond program.

Budget priorities reflect community values

The adopted budget underscores the council’s commitment to responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars while maintaining essential services. Operating funds will continue to fund public safety, street maintenance, parks, and community programs that strengthen families and neighborhoods. Capital allocations will address long‑term infrastructure projects, ensuring Wylie’s growth remains sustainable and aligned with the city’s strategic plan.

Costco development moves forward

Following the budget approval, council members unanimously cleared the path for a proposed Costco development along FM 544. The retailer’s arrival is expected to create jobs, expand shopping options, and generate additional sales‑tax revenue that will further bolster the city’s finances without raising the tax burden on residents.

Local leadership and transparency

Mayor and council members emphasized that the budget process was open, with public input welcomed at each stage. By adopting a balanced budget and a modest tax increase, the council demonstrates fiscal prudence and a dedication to preserving the quality of life that makes Wylie a desirable place to raise a family.

Looking ahead

With the budget now in place, Wylie’s leadership will focus on delivering on the promised projects, monitoring the city’s financial health, and ensuring that the community continues to benefit from responsible governance. Residents can expect regular updates on budget implementation and upcoming council meetings.
