Woman Stabs Two in Times Square, Killed by Police After Shooting Incident

New York City – Police officers responded to a violent incident on Monday evening outside the One Times Square substation, the site of the city’s famous New Year’s Eve ball drop. A woman emerged from a shopping bag carrying two large kitchen knives and stabbed a 68‑year‑old man in the abdomen before turning and stabbing a 32‑year‑old woman, also in the abdomen.

Both victims were rushed to nearby hospitals. The woman who was stabbed is in stable condition, while the man remains under medical observation. The attacker, whose identity has not yet been released, was shot and killed by police after a brief standoff.

Police response and video evidence

New York Police Department (NYPD) officers arrived within minutes of the initial 911 call. Video posted to social media shows at least ten officers surrounding the woman as she brandished the knives. An officer attempted to subdue her with a Taser, but the device failed to incapacitate her, prompting officers to fire their weapons.

The NYPD released a statement confirming that the woman was fatally shot after she continued to pose an imminent threat to officers and the public. The department emphasized that officers used “reasonable force” in accordance with department policy.

Impact on the Times Square area

Times Square, one of the nation’s most heavily trafficked tourist destinations, was temporarily closed to pedestrians while officers secured the scene. The area reopened after a thorough sweep for any additional threats. No other injuries were reported.

Mayor Eric Adams praised the swift actions of the NYPD, stating, “Our officers acted decisively to protect the public and prevent further tragedy in one of our city’s most iconic locations.” The mayor’s office also urged residents and visitors to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

Community reaction

Local business owners expressed concern over the incident’s impact on tourism and public safety. “Times Square is the heart of New York,” said a nearby restaurant manager. “We hope the NYPD continues to keep this area safe for everyone.”

Faith leaders in the city called for prayers for the victims and their families, emphasizing the need for compassion and unity in the wake of violence.

Investigation ongoing

The NYPD has opened a homicide investigation and is reviewing surveillance footage from surrounding businesses and traffic cameras. Detectives are also interviewing witnesses who were present at the scene.

Authorities have asked anyone with additional information or video footage to contact the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers line at 1‑800‑577‑8222.
