Woman killed after being struck on I-95 near Halifax County mile marker 156

Halifax County, N.C. – A tragic traffic accident occurred Saturday night on Interstate 95 southbound near mile marker 156. State Highway Patrol troopers responded to reports of a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian at approximately 8:30 p.m.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found a woman who had been hit by the moving vehicle. Emergency responders attempted resuscitation, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not yet been released as investigators continue to contact family members.

The Highway Patrol has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. No charges have been filed at this time, and the investigation remains ongoing. Troopers are reviewing dash‑camera footage, witness statements, and any available surveillance video to determine the factors that led to the fatal encounter.

Safety reminders for motorists and pedestrians

While the investigation proceeds, local officials are reminding drivers and pedestrians of the importance of vigilance on high‑speed roadways. Interstate 95 is a major north‑south corridor that carries a high volume of traffic through Halifax County, and the combination of limited visibility at night and high travel speeds can increase the risk of accidents.

Motorists are urged to reduce speed in areas where pedestrians may be present, especially near interchanges, rest areas, and local access points. Pedestrians are encouraged to use designated crosswalks, wear reflective clothing after dark, and remain aware of oncoming traffic.

Community response

Local community leaders expressed sorrow over the loss of life. While no official statements have been released, the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office typically offers support services to families affected by such tragedies, including counseling and assistance with funeral arrangements.

Residents who witnessed the incident or have information that could aid the investigation are asked to contact the North Carolina State Highway Patrol at (919) 733‑3000.

Ongoing investigation

The Highway Patrol will release further details as they become available. Updates will be provided through official channels, and the department encourages anyone with relevant information to come forward.

This incident underscores the need for continued public‑safety education and cooperation between law‑enforcement agencies and the community to prevent future tragedies on our highways.
