DC Central Kitchen celebrates 15 years of fresh‑food corner stores

Washington, D.C. – Fifteen years after its launch, D.C. Central Kitchen’s Healthy Corners initiative has turned the city’s corner stores into reliable sources of fresh fruit and vegetables for low‑income neighborhoods. Executive Vice President and Chief Development Officer Alexander Moore says the program now serves over 27,000 SNAP customers annually, delivering three million units of produce to 50 participating stores.

From hesitation to habit

When the nonprofit began in August 2011, small‑business owners were skeptical about demand for perishable foods, and shoppers doubted that corner stores could reliably stock healthy options. Moore explains that the organization tackled both concerns simultaneously. “We identified the real gaps facing folks,” he said, noting that store owners needed a dependable delivery partner and refrigeration equipment, while customers needed assurance that the food could be stored and prepared safely.

To bridge the gap, D.C. Central Kitchen provided refrigerated units, set up a three‑times‑a‑week delivery schedule, and conducted nutrition education, tasting demonstrations, and outreach events. These efforts helped shoppers feel confident that fresh produce was both available and affordable.

Impact on families and local businesses

The program’s reach extends beyond SNAP recipients; all customers can purchase the fresh items at the same low prices. By leveraging bulk purchasing power, the nonprofit keeps costs down, allowing families to stretch their federal benefits while supporting neighborhood retailers. “It’s a win‑win all the way down,” Moore said, emphasizing how the initiative circulates dollars within the community.

In addition to nutrition benefits, the program strengthens local economies. Small store owners report increased foot traffic and higher sales, reinforcing the idea that healthy food access and economic vitality go hand in hand.

Ensuring safety and quality

D.C. Central Kitchen also controls its supply chain to maintain high food‑safety standards, reducing the risk of the contamination issues sometimes seen in national produce distribution. “We’re proactive with our partners to obtain safe food and maintain incredibly high levels of food safety,” Moore added.

Looking ahead, the nonprofit plans to expand the Healthy Corners network further into underserved areas, continuing its mission to make fresh, nutritious food a staple of everyday life for Washington, D.C. families.
