Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers has declared a state of emergency in response to a tornado that went through the Fox Valley, destroying homes, businesses, and infrastructure. The tornado, which was classified as an EF-3, destroyed parts of Appleton, Menasha, and Neenah, leaving a 12-mile path of destruction.
Response Efforts
According to Winnebago County Executive Gordon Hinz, the National Guard assistance request for cleanup should come shortly after the state of emergency declaration. Menasha Police Chief Matthew Albrecht emphasized the importance of respecting road closures and barricades around areas where crews are working, as this will make restoration efforts go faster and smoother.
Some affected residents are without power, water, and/or shelter. Utility officials are working to restore power to the Menasha area, but it may take several days. Community members are asked to stay away from downed lines and power poles. There are three community shelters available for those displaced, as well as charging stations at the Winnebago Fox Cities campus and the old Shopko shopping center.
Volunteer Fox Cities is coordinating volunteer efforts through their website and Facebook page. The Menasha School District has closed all its buildings while staff inspect each building to ensure the safety of its infrastructure. Although Gegan Elementary School and Calder Stadium sustained significant damage, each building will be inspected before it is reopened.
