Willard senior James Slaughter to anchor Tigers’ run‑first offense

Willard, Mo. – The Willard Tigers are counting on senior running back James Slaughter to be the centerpiece of a new run‑first offense as head coach Andy McFarland enters his third season. Slaughter, a 5‑foot‑9, 180‑pound back known for his willingness to take contact, will see a dramatic increase in carries during his final high‑school year.

Slaughter’s style fits the new game plan

Unlike lighter backs who rely on speed and agility, Slaughter describes himself as a “north‑to‑south” runner who uses his weight to drive downhill. “People that are slimmer are always a little faster and more agile,” he said, adding that his build helps him get downhill faster and stay the course.

Coach McFarland’s confidence

Coach McFarland praised Slaughter’s ability to push through contact, noting that size at the running back position is a valuable asset. “You want to see a guy that has a little size at the running back position,” McFarland said, recalling Slaughter’s growth from a lighter sophomore to the powerful senior he is today.

McFarland also highlighted the experience of the Tigers’ offensive line, which he believes will open lanes for Slaughter. “We have a lot of experience on the offensive line,” Slaughter said, expressing pride in their teamwork and understanding of the offense.

Backfield tandem: “Thunder and lightning”

Slaughter will share the backfield with fellow senior Greyson Walden. The coaching staff hopes the duo will keep defenses guessing. “You don’t want to be predictable,” McFarland explained. “We feel confident enough in both of them that they can both run inside and both run outside.”

Leadership and character

Beyond his on‑field abilities, Slaughter has earned high marks for his work ethic and attitude. “He’s a ‘yes, sir,’ ‘no, sir,’ kind of guy,” McFarland said. “He shows up prepared every single day and works extremely hard. He’s been really dependable.”

As the Tigers prepare to open the season on Friday at Waynesville, the community looks forward to a potential turnaround after back‑to‑back 1‑9 and 2‑8 seasons in 2025 and 2024. The shift to a ground‑heavy attack, anchored by Slaughter’s downhill running style, represents a clear strategic change aimed at revitalizing Willard football.

Looking ahead

With senior leadership on both sides of the ball and a seasoned offensive line, the Tigers hope to translate their new identity into wins. Fans and families are encouraged to attend the season opener and support the team as they strive for a bounce‑back year.
