Wildfire near Gracemont burns several acres, firefighters contain flames

Firefighters in Caddo County are actively fighting a wildfire that broke out Tuesday in a forested area north of the small town of Gracemont. The blaze, which quickly spread across several acres of brush and timber, produced a thick plume of white and black smoke that was captured on video by KOCO 5’s Sky 5 news helicopter.

Location and conditions

The fire erupted in a heavily wooded section of the county, an area that has seen multiple wildfires this season. Less than two weeks ago, a separate blaze near Gracemont consumed nearly 1,000 acres, underscoring the heightened fire risk in the region’s dry, windy conditions.

Response and containment

Local fire crews, supported by state resources, moved quickly to the scene. Their primary focus was to protect nearby structures and prevent the flames from spreading to residential areas. By late afternoon, firefighters had established containment lines and were able to keep the fire from reaching homes.

Sky 5’s aerial footage showed massive flames licking the treetops, while ground crews worked with hand tools, water pumps, and fire retardant to suppress the blaze. The combined effort succeeded in limiting the fire’s growth and safeguarding the community.

Impact on residents

Although the fire threatened several structures, no injuries or fatalities have been reported. Residents in the vicinity were advised to stay indoors, close windows, and monitor local alerts for any changes in air quality. The smoke plume was visible from nearby roadways, prompting temporary traffic slowdowns as drivers exercised caution.

Historical context

This incident marks the latest in a series of wildfires that have affected the Gracemont area this year. The previous fire, which burned almost 1,000 acres, prompted a county-wide review of fire‑prevention strategies, including increased public education on safe burning practices and the importance of maintaining defensible space around homes.

Looking ahead

County officials remind citizens that the fire season is not over. They encourage residents to clear brush, keep fire‑danger signs posted, and report any suspicious smoke immediately. The Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management continues to monitor weather patterns that could exacerbate fire conditions, such as low humidity and strong winds.

For ongoing updates, residents can follow KOKO 5’s live coverage, check the county’s emergency management website, or tune in to local radio alerts. The fire remains under control, but authorities will keep a watchful eye on the area until the blaze is fully extinguished.
