Lenoir Is Booked. Odd Duck Is Full. Pull Up a Chair at Jacoby’s Restaurant & Mercantile Instead.

There is a moment, somewhere between your second cast-iron skillet of cornbread and the point when the server refills your sweet tea without being asked, when you stop thinking about the drive back across town and start wondering if you can just live here. That moment happens at Jacoby’s Restaurant & Mercantile, tucked along the banks of the Colorado River on the east side of Austin, and once it happens to you, it will happen every time.

Jacoby’s sits on a working cattle ranch — yes, an actual ranch, right inside city limits — on the 1209 Spyglass Drive bend near the Lady Bird Lake corridor, where the land still feels wide and unhurried even as the city hums just beyond the tree line. The property has been in the Jacoby family for generations, and that continuity shows up in everything: the reclaimed wood, the open-air porch that catches the breeze off the water, the mercantile shelves stocked with Texas-made preserves and dry goods, the handwritten chalkboard specials. This is not a theme restaurant playing at being a ranch. It is a ranch that decided to feed people.

The food leans firmly into the Texas Hill Country tradition — think whole-animal butchery, heirloom grain flour, vegetables sourced from farms within a reasonable drive, and proteins raised with genuine care. The beef program here is anchored by the family’s own cattle, which means the ribeye you order has a provenance you can actually trace. Order it. You will not need to season it with anything. But do get the smoked brisket tacos as a starter, because they represent everything right about the low-and-slow approach: bark intact, fat rendered, tortillas warm and pliable.

The porch is where Jacoby’s really opens up. Long communal tables and mismatched chairs give it the feel of a family supper that you wandered into and were immediately welcomed at. On weekend evenings, the light turns gold around six o’clock, the live oak canopy filters it into something cinematic, and there is usually quiet live music in the background — nothing that asks you to pay attention, just something that fills the air nicely. Children run across the grass. Dogs are welcome. Nobody is in a rush.

Save room for the skillet peach cobbler. It arrives in the same cast iron it was baked in, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream that begins its slow melt the moment it touches the crust. It is the kind of dessert that makes you set your phone down.

The mercantile side of the operation is worth browsing before you leave — local honey, house-made pickles, Texas hot sauces, and the occasional piece of handcrafted cookware make for straightforward, useful souvenirs. Nothing is precious. Everything is practical and Texan in the best sense.

Austin has no shortage of restaurants chasing farm-to-table credibility. Jacoby’s simply has the farm. Come hungry, wear something comfortable, and plan to linger. The river isn’t going anywhere, and neither will you.
