West Palm Beach Police Chase Lawsuit

A confidential mediation is set to take place in the federal civil rights lawsuit filed after a 2024 police chase in West Palm Beach that killed two innocent women, Marcia Pochette and her pregnant daughter, Jenice Woods.

Background of the Case

The lawsuit alleges that the officers violated the victims’ civil rights and that the city failed to properly train, supervise, and discipline the officers involved in the pursuit. Prosecutors say members of the West Palm Beach Police Department’s now-disbanded ‘Ghost Unit’ followed the driver, Neoni Copeland, through multiple cities at speeds topping 100 mph after an attempted stop that began with a tinted window violation.

Attorneys for the families of the two women are set to meet with lawyers for the city and seven former officers charged in the case. The families’ attorneys are making a significant demand for the surviving husbands, citing the egregious nature of the facts.

The former officers have asked a federal judge to dismiss the lawsuit. If no settlement is reached, the families’ attorneys say they will file a response to that motion.

Seeking Justice

The victims’ families are seeking justice and are prepared to pursue the case if mediation fails. ‘We are making a significant demand for the surviving husbands because the facts are that egregious,’ said Scott Smith, the victims’ attorney.

The families are still searching for justice, and the mediation is a crucial step in the process. ‘I still see her face because they took us to the hospital and allowed us to see them. That’s the image I’ll never forget,’ said Devin Woods, Jenice Woods’ husband.
