Oklahoma Tightens Animal Inspections

Oklahoma is taking steps to prevent the spread of New World screwworm, a flesh-eating parasite that can infect livestock, pets, and wildlife. State agriculture officials have announced that there are no confirmed cases of New World screwworm in Oklahoma, but the pest has been detected in Texas and New Mexico.

New Restrictions

To help keep the parasite out of the state, Oklahoma is now requiring additional inspections, health paperwork, and permits for certain animals coming from areas where the parasite has been found or is being monitored. Officials are also urging ranchers and pet owners to watch for suspicious wounds and report any concerns immediately.

The New World screwworm feeds on living tissue and can cause significant harm to animals. The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry is working to prevent the spread of the parasite and protect the state’s animal population.
