The Resource Depot in West Palm Beach is celebrating Plastic Free July by turning trash into treasures. The nonprofit has diverted more than 200,000 pounds of reusable materials, giving them new life through the community.
Reducing Plastic Waste
Chelsea Odom, the director of education and artist relations with the Resource Depot, says the goal of Plastic Free July is to get people to change their consumer habits and reduce single-use plastic intake. Simple changes can make a big difference, such as ditching plastic bags at the grocery store, using reusable containers for fluids, and switching to bamboo toothbrushes.
The Resource Depot is partnering with Jack Johnson’s nonprofit, the Johnson Ohana Foundation, to raise awareness about the importance of reducing plastic waste. The foundation will match donations up to $2,500, and the Resource Depot is raffling off two tickets to Jack Johnson’s concert.
Reducing plastic waste is especially important in Florida, where the unique ecosystem is being damaged by plastic pollution. Animals are ingesting plastic, getting entangled in it, and humans are also being affected. By making small changes to our daily habits, we can make a big difference in protecting the environment.
