Students from the Shawnee Mission School District recently participated in The Rabbit Hole’s Beyond The Page Challenge, a Real World Learning opportunity that allowed them to collaborate with museum professionals and design exhibits based on beloved children’s books.
Local Students Turned Designers
Nieman Elementary, Belinder Elementary, and Indian Hills Middle School were among 11 local schools that took part in the challenge. The task was to find a book, define its ‘spirit,’ and turn it into a scaled physical experience. The students worked together to debate story ‘essence’ and author backgrounds, and discussed architectural requirements for their exhibits.
The goal was to be named the ‘winner’ by a panel of judges. Competition was steep, with multiple groups per school vying for the top elementary and middle school spots. Regardless of the outcome, these students proved that they can lead and perform on a ‘real world’ stage.
The Shawnee Mission School District serves students in Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade in 34 elementary schools, five middle schools, five high schools, and several educational centers. The district’s objective is to provide each student with a personalized learning plan that will prepare them for college and careers, with the interpersonal skills they need for life success.
