Weekend Overnight Westbound 60 Freeway Closures Begin in Diamond Bar

The San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments (SGVCOG) announced that overnight closures of the westbound I-60 in Diamond Bar will begin this Saturday. All westbound lanes between Lemon Avenue and Diamond Bar Boulevard will be fully shut down during the early‑morning hours.

Schedule and Affected Access Points

Closures will run from 12:01 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. on Saturdays and from 12:01 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. on Sundays. The same pattern will repeat on the following Saturdays and Sundays through the end of September: Sept. 5‑6, 12‑13, 19‑20, and 26‑27.

The work also impacts several on‑ and off‑ramps:

  • Westbound 60 Diamond Bar Boulevard on‑ramp
  • Westbound 60 Grand Avenue on‑ and off‑ramps
  • Southbound Orange (57) Freeway connector to the westbound 60
  • Westbound 60 connector to the southbound 57

In addition, the Grand Avenue Bridge will be closed for the duration of the project.

Why the Closures Matter

SGVCOG officials said the closures are essential to safely accommodate ongoing construction and to advance improvements designed to enhance safety, improve traffic flow, and reduce congestion at one of the region’s most heavily traveled and hazardous freeway interchanges.

The two‑mile stretch of I‑60 has been identified as one of the nation’s worst truck bottlenecks, with roughly 350,000 vehicles traveling the corridor each day. By completing the 57/60 Confluence Project— a major safety and traffic‑improvement effort led by SGVCOG in partnership with LA Metro and Caltrans— the agencies hope to alleviate the chronic delays that affect commuters, freight operators, and local residents.

What Drivers Should Do

Motorists are urged to avoid the area during the closure windows and to plan for extra travel time. Suggested alternate routes include using the southbound I‑57, taking surface streets such as Grand Avenue or Diamond Bar Boulevard, or detouring onto the nearby I‑10 corridor where feasible.

Travel apps and real‑time traffic alerts will reflect the closures, helping drivers make informed decisions. Residents and commuters are encouraged to stay updated through SGVCOG’s website and social‑media channels for any changes to the schedule.

Community Impact

While the temporary inconvenience may be frustrating, local leaders stress that the long‑term benefits— fewer accidents, smoother traffic flow, and reduced emissions from idling vehicles— will serve the community’s families and businesses. The project aligns with broader regional goals to protect the safety of commuters and to preserve the quality of life for Diamond Bar’s residents.
